What a sad day when I found out George Carlin had passed. You see, I grew up with the kind of parents that didn’t have much to say about me flipping the channels back and fourth between the Cartoon Network and Springer. So at a fairly young age, I had free roam of the tube and as a result, was introduced to what would be one of my favorite comedians of all time.

The following I believe is dead on:

George Carlin was my favorite comic.

He had what a virtuoso must: control.
Virtuosos take away the fear in you that they will drop the ball,
because they never do.

He would ease you into generally agreeing with his world view and then sneak in the oddest statement he could come up with, like “You ever get hit in the head with an axe?”

One time he told this joke about his grandfather retiring for the evening, telling him “I’m gonna go upstairs and f**k your grandma for a while.”

His telling of the Aristocrats joke is by far the most vulgar and graphic.

He was also one of those entertainers whom you “share custody” with someone you love.
My brother Carl and I would recite Carlin lines all the time…

He was known as a “counter-cultural” comedian.
And it’s a shame he’s gone, because these days there’s a hell of a lot of culture to be countered.

I never was able to see Lawrence Taylor play football that often when I was younger. Or at least understand his greatness when I did. But I did get to witness a player that might as well have been LT. Michael Strahan, after 15 years in the NFL and wearing #92 and a blue jersey, has retired today.

The great players from my generation are moving on. Last year Tiki Barber and this year Michael Strahan. Its tough. These are the guys I grew up watching and make my love for football run even deeper. So like a graduation, its painful and beautiful at the same time.

And although I will always say I would love for him to play one more year, he had the opportunity to go out like few do. As a world champ.

There is no doubt in my mind I will be in Canton when you are forever enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Thank you Michael.
